LiveCut
Livecut is based on BBCut the BreakBeat Cutting library written by Nick Collins for SuperCollider
The BBCut Library began out of work on an algorithm to simulate the automatic cutting of breakbeats in the style of early jungle or drum and bass Nick Collins.
Livecut is only a small subset of what is possible with BBCut, but as it is available as a VST plugin, it is much easier to start experimenting with it.
It is a live beat-slicer but instead of manipulating equal chunks of audio like most beatslicer do, it works on the notion of audio cuts whose length and number of repetition depends on the context and the cutting procedure. cuts are organized in blocks which then form a phrase. see Image below. And each phrase can be ended by a roll or fill.

on s'est vu sur l AES vendredij'y etait en tant qu exposant egalement pour A-volute qui fait du son 3D (et pas binaural)(on a egalement parler de musique venetian snares...)et tu m a conseiller de jeter un oeil a ton plugin et franchement il est terrible!!!!

I cant get this to work in Ableton 5 or Audio Mulch. Is there a minimum processor requirement? it simply dosent show in Ableton, does in Mulch but cant open it.

Je viens de passer la journée à bosser un titre breakbeat avec Livecut que je découvre, et c'est ENORME ! Tout ce dont j'ai pu réver depuis des années pour bidouiller des boucles est là dans Livecut !
Et puis avec l'enregistrement de l'automation en plusieurs passes, on arrive à des choses vraiment géniales question arrangement.
Juste un problème de sauvegardes de presets (dommage... obligé de faire des captures d'écrans pour garder ces précieuses heures de bidouilles :-), pour info sur Win XP, SX3.

this vst isnt realy all that great. i couldnt see myself usueing this in any of my music. no one on warp would waste their time with it either. if all these people think this thing is so awsome, heres a hint: go out and pick yourself up a copy of native instruments reaktor 5. the only vst FX plugin ive ever seen even half worth useing is glitch. vst FX mostly suck. this thing sounds like a bent walmart toy. def not worthy to appear in any real idm or electronic tracks. just sounds cheap.

i was working on a live set and looking for a beat repeat/chopper kind of thing.. besides the usual glitch (which i find abit too uncontrolabble/random for me live except for very sparse fx)
with abit of tweaking i had the livecut set up very nicely on my drums submix doing really nice cuts and edits which i was very happy with :)
anyway - this is a mp3 of a rehearsal i did for my gig - it's abit crazy and random as i was jamming around allover the place.. i'll post the proper mix once i've finished editing it

all done on live 5.2 with a korg microkontrol for knobtwiddling,track selection,mutes,activating fx,eq cuts,crossfading etc etc..

The plugin sounds really good.. it actually generates EXACTLY the kind of sounds that I'm looking for...
BUT...
It's random, I need 100% control over what it's doing. Does anyone know how to manually do this kind of thing. The extremely fast repetitions that it produces seem difficult to achieve manually... especially when programming drum patterns. Simply repeating a particular drum hit by drawing it in the sequencer multiple times just doesn't give the same sound as this plugin. Would anyone like to share any words of wisdom about manually producing these kinds of sounds?
Thanks for doing it. But as someone else said there are still some problems with Logic Pro 7.2.2
- presets saving does not work correctly (some parameters seem to be saved, others not)
- most important: sometimes, randomly (I still did not get when exactly it happens), it "dies". I mean it stops making sound (so the track becomes silent if it's the only insert plug), so the only chance is to delete it from the insert and put it again. Just bypassing and reactivating it is not enough.

saving/loading presets is fixed
it makes some interresting sound, but is unusable because you don't know what really happens. If you ever used Artillery to cut your beats with your keyboard you know what beat cutting can be.

This is one of the coolest plugins I have ever come across, free or commercial. It is fantastic for adding interest to loops in real time. The trouble is, I often times experience the plugin stopping the audio stream (I know its the plugin because audio returns when bypassed). Perhaps the problem is with Ableton Live, but I can't imagine a better host for using this particular plugin...

your livecut is really great and i hope you realease soon the upadate, but..i was wondering: is it possible to use nick collins bbcut without having any knowledge of supercollider? if yes how?? or i am supposed to learn how to program in supercollider in order to use bbcut library?
i just know nothing about coding etc, so i downloaded supercollider and the bbcut library hoping to get something almost ready to use..but i guess i was wrong
Well SuperCollider if far from being plug an dplay, however you can play with Nick's help files which have a lot of explanantions in it as well as some snippet of SupercOllider code ready to be executed.
then learning programming can come much later

Bonjour. Ce plug-in à l'air d'enfer. J'aimerais beaucoup pouvoir l'utiliser. J'suis sur ProTools M-Powered, la dernière version (7.4) et niveau hardware j'ai un M-Audio Ozonic. Et je n’arrive absolument pas à faire marcher ce plug-in, j'l'ai "wrapper" avec Fxpansion's Vst To Rtas Adaptor. ProTools le voit sans problème. J'peux le sélectionner et tout, j'vois l'interface, etc. Mais dès que j'le charge, plus aucun son ne sort depuis mes instru' virtuels. Je ne capte pas, j'ai vu sur "la doc" qu'il fallait checker un truc sur l'horloge midi mais bon ça m'as pas avancé. Merci d'avance si quelqu'un peut m'donner un coup de main. :).

how do i make this work on logic 8 ? where do i stick the file after i download it..and where can i acess it from within logic ?

Awesome plugin dude, keep up the good work! It would be cool to have a 'program' feature to eliminate the randomness .And as the above poster mentioned, it kicks the 'Glitch' plugin up the rectum (listening through tracks people have uploaded on myspace, it is so obvious when you hear it in action, you can spot it a mile off!)
Hi there, i installed live cut and was working really cool. after opening again ableton each timei was enable live cut it was muting my chanel i have it signed!:(:(:( i unistall ableton all my vsts and installed them just to make live cut works but after achieving make it work 1 time since i installed ableton and all vsts back i was able to taste it once again, but since then i cannot use it each time i drug it into the channel it mutes the channel.
Please mdsp or any other let me know how to solve this i love this vst

In response to the comment about how to get what you want from livecut given the random nature of it's functions. My solutions are these:
I take several tracks, send them to a bus track and put livecut on the bus track. Some killer sh*t happens when you put in on the master track as well and automate it.
Also, I've having success recording audio files just playing with livecut and then sampling those audio files taking the best parts.

0.8 and 0.9 both don't seem to work at all in FL Studio, because about 95% of the time it just mutes whatever's sent through it. Then the other 5% of the time it spits out the chopped sounds, which is cool, but still completely unusable. Is there something I'm missing??
